Course Aims:
Upon completing this course, participants will be able to:
· Explain the benefits of exercise for older adults
· Describe the major anatomical, physiological, skeletal and risk factors of older adults
· Demonstrate, explain, spot some of the most common exercises used for strength training, flexibility and cardiovascular exercise for older adults
· Explain the particular health concerns and contraindications for exercise for older adults
· Design exercise programmes for older adults
Target Audience:
This course has been designed for fitness instructors and/or managers that wish to improve their ability to work with older adults.
Course Description:
The 6-hour course is made up of four main topic areas as follows:
1. Physiology of aging
2. Benefits of Physical activity
· Physiological benefits
· Psychological benefits
· Social benefits
3. General older adult exercise safety guidelines
4. Principle of exercise prescription for older adults
· Cardiorespiratory training
· Strength training
· Flexibility training
5. Exercise programs for different the levels of functioning
· Physically dependent
· Physically frail
· Physically independent
· Physically fit
Successful completion of the course results in the award of a FIT certificate of Training Older Adults.
